Tarot • Major Arcana II

After the vibrant energy of the Magician, the Fool encounters a new face of power: that of silence. The High Priestess embodies intuitive intelligence, this hidden force that operates in the shadows and refuses to justify itself.

In the great symbolic journey of the Tarot, each arcanum represents a necessary step in the soul’s growth. This journey truly begins with the Fool, this eternal wanderer in quest of maturity. After experiencing the bounding, creative energy of the Magician — the wizard of action and will — the Fool hits a wall of silence: the High Priestess.

Our modern culture is a perpetual celebration of the Magician. We are commanded to act, to decide, to expose and to prove. Yet, the High Priestess teaches us that true power doesn’t always reside in movement. She embodies this sacred moment of withdrawal where we stop “doing” to let ourselves be traversed by what we know, without yet being able to explain it. This is the intelligence of the threshold, the one that precedes all tangible manifestation.

The Anima: The passage from light to fertile shadow

If the Magician is the face of the Animus (the masculine pole of action, light and clear consciousness), the High Priestess makes us tip over into the realm of the Anima. For the Fool, this is a radical passage from “square 1” to “square 2”, an immersion into the depths of receptivity.

The Fool first passed into the Magician’s square, which corresponds to the animus, all the masculine qualities: activity, light, consciousness… We then move to square number 2, which corresponds to the Anima: the High Priestess.

This shift toward shadow is not a fall, but a fecundation. In analytical psychology, this passage marks the necessity to temporarily abandon the clarity of reasoning to explore “what is hidden”. It is in this darkness, this territory of Yin and fertile shadows, that the great transformations of the individual are prepared.

The Book and the Veil: Knowledge that cannot be spoken

Also known as the “High Priestess” in Tarot decks since the 18th century, the Papesse is the guardian of doctrines and secret teachings. She is depicted with a book on her lap, symbol of an infinite source of knowledge. But beware: this book is not a technical manual.

The veil surrounding her emphasizes that this access is reserved for those who accept mystery. This is an intelligence of “feeling”, a direct understanding of invisible worlds that cannot be translated into words. It is that inner certainty, sometimes troubling, that we carry within us without being able to verbalize or transmit it to others. She is the guardian of what we know “by heart”, far from logical demonstrations.

The “Whiteness” of intuition: A cold but necessary truth

In the Marseille Tarot by Jodorowski & Camoin, an iconographic detail immediately strikes the observer: the High Priestess is the only character whose face is completely devoid of color. This immaculate whiteness is not a sign of erasure, but a mark of absolute neutrality.

She is the only character who is white, who has no color on her face. You can really see the cold side of the High Priestess and of intuition.

This “coldness” symbolizes a form of sacred availability. For intuition to be pure, it must detach itself from burning emotions, personal opinions and social agitation. The High Priestess is secret and difficult to access because she demands total inner silence. Her whiteness is a filter: it only lets through naked truth, stripped of passion’s artifices. This is a necessary distance to see what others, too busy acting, no longer perceive.

An act of rebellion against the dictatorship of reason

In an era obsessed with data, proof and immediate results, the High Priestess is a figure of dissent. As esoteric tradition emphasizes, this card is “not at all adapted to today’s society”. She refuses to justify herself.

Following the High Priestess’s teaching means daring to trust a perception that has no proof to provide yet. It means accepting that intelligence is not solely Cartesian. Claiming your right to silence and intuitive understanding is a vital act of rebellion against a world that has lost the sense of the sacred and the unspoken.

The Art of stillness: When the advice is to do nothing

On a practical level, the appearance of the High Priestess in your life or in a reading is a clear signal: the hour is not for the Magician’s action, but for the witness’s observation.

The High Priestess’s advice is radical: it is not yet time to intellectually understand or put words on what you are going through.

  • Active stillness: Don’t seek to influence external events. Settle down.
  • Pure receptivity: Observe the messages from your unconscious without trying to analyze them immediately.
  • Respect for gestation time: Some truths are anchored so deeply that they need silence to mature.
  • Instinctive trust: Listen to what whispers within you, even if it seems to contradict the ambient “logic”.
✦ ✦ ✦

The Trap of secrecy: The excess of solitude

Every force has its shadow. The High Priestess, in her negative aspect, can become an ice prison. The taste for secrecy and withdrawal can transform into sterile isolation or a coldness that cuts one off from life.

Remaining eternally in the High Priestess’s shadow means risking never bringing your intuitions into the world. The High Priestess is a maturation phase, a stage of the Fool, not a final destination. There comes a moment when whiteness must give way to the colors of life, when one must accept being warmed by “the heat of passion” and reintegrate the flow of human activity.

Conclusion: Listen to what whispers within you

The High Priestess reminds us that silence is not an absence, but a full presence. She invites us to rediscover the power of stillness in a world that no longer knows how to stop. She is the obligatory passage for anyone who wishes their future action to be anchored in real wisdom rather than in vain agitation.

Final reflection

In which area of your life are you desperately trying to find logical explanations, when your instinct has been dictating the answer for a long time already? Perhaps it’s time to close the book, draw the veil and simply… feel.
